4 Tips To Maximize Your Home Storage Space

Closets are overflowing with winter coats, the cabinets are stacked to the top with pots and pans, and boxes of old photos are slowly collecting dust in the garage. Yet there’s always something new that needs be put away somewhere. You’re running out of space, but you can’t make your closets any bigger. Tackle your storage problems by working smarter and more efficiently.
Use It Or Move It
If you haven’t used it in a few months, box it up. This is a good rule of thumb to help decide between what should stay in the cabinet, and what should be stored safe and sound in the basement or garage. You don’t have to say goodbye to these things forever. A properly organized and labeled storage system will make things easy to find and save you space inside.
Box It Up
When you’re packing your things into boxes, remember that you’re planning to get it out of the box someday. Ensure there’s plenty of bubble wrap or newspaper in the box to keep your things safe, and tape down the lid to keep out dust. Be sure to label the outside of every box. There’s nothing more frustrating than searching for something in a room of blank, unmarked boxes. Fill up the box. It saves space in the closet, and a stack of half empty boxes will surely collapse. Although, make sure they’re not too heavy to carry.
Stack To The Ceiling
Store things all the way to the ceiling. This is the key to efficiency. Don’t just pile your things into a wobbly tower though. Build shelves in your basement or garage and work vertically. This will make sure you maximize the space you have. Put the things you use most often toward the front and the top, which will ensure they’re easily within reach.
Get Creative
Some things just don’t belong in boxes. Hanging clothes can be stored in garment bags and racks to keep them safe and wrinkle-free. If you’re moving old furniture to the garage, be sure to fill up any drawers or cabinets. Turn couches on their ends, and hang bicycles from the ceiling.
Before you make the decision to rent a storage unit or add on to the garage, make sure you’re getting the most out of the space you have. With a well-organized and thought out storage system, you’ll be amazed at what you can fit in your closets, basement or garage. Just be smart when packing things up and work vertically.
